James Wan explains why he’s returning for Aquaman 2

In December 2018, James Wan delivered not only the biggest hit of his career, but also the highest-grossing installment in the DC Extended Universe with Aquarius, so it’s no surprise that he’s currently back behind the camera in the sequel to the Jason Momoa-led superhero blockbuster.

Filming on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is now underway in the UK and speaking with IGN, Wan has revealed what drew him back to the DC sequel (and why he probably won’t return for a third):

“There’s a reason I don’t make three movies in the same series,” Wan says. “It would be lucky if I made a sequel. And then I’m just bored. I want to do something different. I would say what really got me excited to come back? [Aquaman] is finding a story that I think is worthwhile and if not better than the first movie. And also, for me, really, if I come back to a sequel, be it for Treacherous 2 or The incantation 2, and now Aquaman 2 I helped shape and create these characters that I eventually fall in love with, and I feel like I’m not done with it yet. So I feel like I owe them one more story from me.”

Wan stated that he “wanted to move on to the next chapter of Arthur Curry’s story, and Orm’s story, and Mera’s story, and Black Manta’s story,” Wan screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick wrote for “finding a really cool story to bring these characters back, and then grow them in a big way and take them to the next level or chapter of their lives.

“The first film introduced audiences to such a vast world that was only on the surface. And I feel like I can dig deep into that now and expand on that,” continued Wan. “It’s when I feel like I have nothing left to say, that’s what I’m holding back. But right now isn’t that the case with The Lost Kingdom.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry and Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones) in an undisclosed role.
