Chinese giant Huawei is holding its next blockbuster launch event tomorrow, July 29, where the company is tipped to unveil its Android 12 alternative and an all-new flagship smartphone. In the final hours before the bumper event, some details have leaked out.

Huawei’s latest launch comes just over a year after the previous announcement of the Huawei P40 phone – and nearly two years since it was swept by a US trade ban that prevented it from dealing with all US companies. This meant that while the phones still run some version of Android, it hasn’t been able to include popular apps and services like Gmail, Google Maps or the Google Play Store.

In response, sales plummeted in the US and Europe. In 2020, it was a real competitor to Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi and was in the top five smartphone brands. However, in the first three months of this year, Huawei has fallen dramatically out of favor, being overtaken by newcomers Oppo and Vivo.

However, Huawei has not let go of the ban.

It has spent two years developing its own operating system to avoid relying on Google’s Android. The rival HarmonyOS has already been announced for the company’s two most recent tablets in the MatePad line. But one of the most anticipated announcements of tomorrow will be exactly what it will look like on mobile.

As you might expect, Huawei’s website is light on detail, but boasts that “HarmonyOS will unlock new possibilities in inter-device communication and enjoy innovative features for all-round superior performance, with strong security management.”

Other details of the new phone are scarce.

The edge thinks cameras will once again be a major selling point. Huawei’s phones were one of the first with zoom lenses and night mode. Huawei chief executive Richard Yu teased the rumors, teasing on his Weibo page that the phone would mark “a new era of mobile imaging”. Leaked photos appear to show a huge array of rear cameras.

Journalist Ishan Agarwal, who has a solid track record when it comes to unannounced smartphones, shared on Twitter today that he had received full details of the specifications of the Huawei P50.

He revealed that the new flagship will have a 13MP front camera and a total of 167MP across four rear cameras. It comes in 256GB and 512GB models, with 4,360mAh, 66W wired, 50W wireless charging and stereo speakers. However, Agarwal claims that the phone not Using 5G connectivity, which would be a surprising move for a Chinese company.

If its facts are correct, the Huawei P50 could also use a Time of Flight camera. This advanced technology is used to help cameras determine the distance between objects, making it ideally equipped for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality apps and games.

While these specs sound promising – and Agarwal has been on the money before – we won’t know for sure until tomorrow’s product launch event. express.co.uk will tune, so check back tomorrow for the real specs and inside story.
