WD Black SN850 NVMe SSD with heatsink meets Sony’s PS5 storage expansion requirements; Compatibility testing in progress

The Western Digital Black SN850 NVMe SSD with heatsink meets Sony’s PS5 storage expansion requirements and the drive is currently undergoing testing.

Yesterday, manufacturer Seagate confirmed that the upcoming FireCuda 530 PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD is one of the first drives compatible with Sony’s next-gen console. In addition to this exciting announcement, Sony has released the first beta update of the PS5 system with support for M.2 storage expansion drives. Unfortunately, only those in the beta program in certain countries will be able to try out the highly anticipated storage expansion option before it becomes available to all PS5 owners.

Fast forward one day, and now another manufacturer has confirmed its own storage expansion option for Sony’s console – Western Digital (WD). Following yesterday’s beta news from Sony, we contacted WD to inquire about its SN850 NVMe SSD, and a spokesperson confirmed to us that this drive does indeed meet Sony’s requirements.

“Based on Sony’s published requirements, we can confirm that our WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD with Heatsink (500GB-2TB) meets the stated requirements to expand console storage on the PlayStation 5 for those with access to the PlayStation 5 Beta. software,” the statement from WD reads. “Compatibility testing is underway.”

WD’s NVMe SN850 SSD with heatsink is available in 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB, with the 500 GB version selling for $139.99 in the US. The 1TB version costs $249.99 and the 2TB version is currently available for $429.99. WD’s NVMe SSD was officially announced late last year.

We’ll update you as soon as we learn more about Sony’s PS5 storage expansion option. Sony has not yet announced the release date of the new firmware update that supports the new M.2 storage expansion for the PlayStation 5. Based on previous statements from Sony, it will be available to the general public this summer.
