There is still a little insight into Shin Megami Tensei V character designs by Masayuki Doi. The previous two statements discussed new characters Amanzako and Fionn mac Cumhaill. However, the last on Twitter explains why the SMT V Angel returned to his roots. The idea was to look more “angel-like” to match the game’s themes.
In particular, Doi pointed to the conflicts between legal and chaotic factions in SMT V, a common theme, and how the angel’s new look connects to it. The gale was supposed to create a more striking dynamic between the two.
Here’s Doi’s full analysis of Angel’s design.
Today I introduce Angel. While they are a staple in the SMT universe, we decided to update the character design this time to better fit the role they play in the game’s story.
I’m sure those who’ve seen our trailers are already starting to get it, but in this game there are a lot of scenes where the lawful and chaotic factions clash head on. As such, it was vital that Angel seemed more angelic to juxtapose demons like Daemon – the foot soldiers of the chaos faction – during various cutscenes such as those moments of battle, when they’ve lost, and when they’re in attack formation. For these reasons, we decided to create an entirely new design, taking inspiration from various religious paintings that depict what angels generally looked like.
In terms of design, we incorporated traditional themes and motifs often seen in religious paintings, such as the smooth, white garments, wings and the disc, or halo, that moves the head. Perhaps the most notable feature is the face, which we designed to look like a mask to express how Angel is almost like a mechanical puppet, loyal to God.
Shin Megami Tensei V coming to Nintendo Switch in Japan on November 11, 2021 and worldwide on November 12, 2021.
