While both the PS5 and Xbox series offer similar power and performance, they come with different features.

And right now, the Xbox Series X and Game Pass combination has proven to be a huge hit during its first year on the shelves.

And while the tech giant hasn’t caught up with Sony’s PS5 in sales yet, it’s clear that the PlayStation console needs something to counter this.

And news this week that Sony could be working on a massive Virtual Reality upgrade for the PS5 could be the perfect solution.

While the new report should be taken with a grain of salt, it would make sense that the PS5 VR would play a big part in PlayStation’s future.

The original headset proved to be a solid seller on the PS4, and building on the existing customer base seems like a good idea.

It’s also a PlayStation console exclusive feature, with no announced or apparently planned headsets for the Xbox Series X.

The Xbox Game Pass may offer a tidy library of games to help you start your new Xbox Series X experience, but it doesn’t include VR titles.

The report states that Sony recently showed its latest Virtual Reality technology to studios and now has plans to push the boundaries.

According to news shared via PushSquareSony is looking for AAA game content for the PS5 VR.

This means moving away from the proof of concept demos and shorter games found on the PS4.

Upgrades made in the PS5 VR headset will allow for greatly enhanced experiences.

This includes reported technology like foveated rendering, which will reportedly allow you to track your eye movements to know what you’re looking at and allow you to push the most rendering power into that area.

But even with improved specs and power, there will still be issues with things like how long a person can stay submerged in, in addition to things like the weight of the headset.

From what’s been shared this week, the PS5 VR will be unveiled in 2022, making it the next big Sony hardware launch.

Rumors suggest that the PSVR 2 will be available for purchase in late 2022, but it’s unclear at this point how global events could affect the rollout.

The second PlayStation VR headset was confirmed as genuine earlier this year, with Sony tells fans in February 2021:

“We continue to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation.

“We’re using what we’ve learned since the launch of PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that improves everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cable to simplify installation and improve ease of use, while providing a high-fidelity visual experience.

“One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will include some of the key features of the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to fit our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

“There is still a lot going on for our new VR system, so it won’t launch in 2021. But we wanted to give our fans this early update as the development community has started creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.”
