As revealed in his memoir, Alec Guinness: The Official Biography, Sir Alec wrote to a friend to explain how “nonsense” Star Wars was.

He wrote, “I got a movie (20th Cent Fox) that I can accept if they come up with the right money.

“[Filming in] London and [North] Africa, from mid-March. Science fiction – which I think about for a moment – but is directed by Paul [sic] Lucas doing American Graffiti, which makes me feel like I should.”

Sir Alec added: “A lot. Fairytale nonsense, but might be interesting.” (sic)

Sir Alec did not stop there, however. He later wrote another letter from the Star Wars set where his disdain for the franchise continued.

He continued: “I can’t say I’m enjoying the movie – new nonsense dialogues reach me every other day on nuggets of pink paper – and none of it makes my character clear or even bearable.

“I only think, luckily, of the delicious bread [money], which will help me keep going through April, even if Yahoo collapses in a week.”

He went on to discuss his colleagues, one of whom he couldn’t even remember the name of.

Sir Alec continued: “I have to go to the studio and work with a dwarf (very sweet, – and he has to wash himself in a bidet) and your fellow countrymen Mark Hamill and Tennyson (that can’t be right) [Harrison] Ford – Ellison (? – No!*) – well, a slender, languid young man who is probably intelligent and funny.”

Finally, he lamented, “But God, God, they make me feel ninety — and treat me like I’m 106.

Despite his constant complaints about the film during production, Sir Alec – eventually – changed his mind.

In an interview with Michael Parkinson, he said of Star Wars, “There’s a kind of wonderful freshness to it.”

Sir Alec continued: ‘Like a lovely fresh air. When I came out of the cinema… I thought, ‘London is a bit rough, and dirty and kind of rubbish, isn’t it?’ Because this had all been so stimulating.”

He also wrote in his diary: “It is quite a dazzling film as spectacle and technically brilliant. Exciting, very loud and hearty.

“The fight scenes at the end are five minutes too long I think, and some of the dialogue is unbearable and a lot of it gets lost in noise, but it’s still a lively experience.”

He also made a staggering amount of money from his involvement in the picture.

Sir Alec has negotiated with Lucas for a two percent cut in Star Wars profits.

The pair later increased this to 2.5 percent after offering some changes to the script during filming.

He later mentioned his wealth, saying, “Let me leave it by saying that I can live the rest of my life in the fairly modest way I am used to now, that I have no debt and I can afford to work. don’t refuse” doesn’t appeal to me.”

The Star Wars saga is now available on Disney Plus.
