If you’ve been treating yourself to a shiny new Android phone for the past few years, you may have noticed a rather irritating design flaw. Virtually all devices from companies such as Samsung, Google, Xiaomi and OnePlus now have a full edge-to-edge screen that fills the entire front of the phone. It’s clearly a great upgrade, because without the thick bezels you find on older phones, you get more screen in a product that isn’t physically bigger in your pocket.

Unfortunately, switching to these all-screen designs has created a major problem as there is no obvious place to put the front-facing selfie camera. Since the introduction of bezel-less smartphones, we’ve seen manufacturers try out countless ideas, including notches, pop-up mechanisms, and screen-penetrating designs.

Samsung even launched some unique desktop patterns that tried to disguise the camera and make it look a lot less obvious.

While the front cameras have gotten smaller, they’re still quite annoying, especially when you’re trying to watch Netflix on the screen for an evening, as they often stand out as a giant blot on your face.

Fortunately, it now seems that one company is almost ready to launch a device that will finally solve this irritating problem.

Android update OPPO

OPPO has been trying to come up with the ultimate solution since 2018 and it now seems that the Chinese company has cracked it.

The new USC (under-screen camera) technology has just been announced and allows phone companies to tuck the snapper neatly behind the screen so that users are not distracted by it.

OPPO says that by combining the best in hardware innovation and AI improvements, the technology places the front-facing snapper under the smartphone screen while maintaining the fluidity of the screen.

In addition to not affecting the screen, the company says images will look just as good as those from a standard selfie camera. We’ll have to wait and see if that’s actually true, but it sure sounds impressive and will get the screen completely camera-free.

Speaking about the update, the company said: “OPPO’s next-generation USC will implement a suite of AI imaging algorithms developed by OPPO’s research institutes, including diffraction reduction, HDR and AWB, alleviating problems such as image blur and glare. diffraction reduction model that uses tens of thousands of images to control problems caused by light diffraction, users can capture clearer, more natural images.

“As consumer demand for larger screen-to-body ratios and new smartphone form factors grows, OPPO has invested heavily in R&D in these areas.”

It’s unclear when the first Android phone with a hidden selfie camera will be released, but hopefully it won’t be too long of a wait.
