Next James Bond: 007 Producers On Franchise Future After Daniel Craig And TV Spinoffs

Recent articles

After 15 years in the role, Daniel Craig finally hands in his License to Kill with No Time To Die next month. As for the next James Bond and the future of the franchise, the 007 producers will have to make plans soon, if they haven’t already. And now that Amazon is buying Bond studio MGM, are there any TV spin-offs on the way?

Speaking to Total Film, Barbara Broccoli said it was hard to think about Bond’s future until No Time To Die had its moment, and admitted they wanted to focus on celebrating Craig’s tenure as 007.

But the Bond producer did say: “And when the dust settles, look at the landscape and think about the future.

“While I think one thing we’ve definitely learned in the last 18 months is that you never know what the future holds. So we have to sit down and think about it.”

As for all TV shows in the Bond universe, for both Broccoli and fellow Bond producer Micheal G Wilson, it would presumably be a fat Dr. no?

Broccoli said, “You get the idea,” while Wilson added, “We’ve resisted that call for 60 years.”

What the future holds for Bond 26 and the new 007 star, the pair are interested in “experimenting and pushing the boundaries” of the franchise after the risks of the Craig era had the claims of Bond expert Mark Edlitz paid off.

Last year, Express.co.uk spoke to the author of The Lost Adventures of James Bond, who has interviewed many of the key 007 franchise players over the years.

Edlitz said, “Three-time Bond screenwriter Bruce Feirstein told me Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson know where the dead end is in the script phase.”

Edlitz continued: “While Richard Maibaum, who wrote 13 Bond scripts, talked about the collaborative nature of writing a 007 movie.

“The screenwriter said he would be in a room with producers Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli, Harry Saltzman, as well as the director, production designer and editor and everyone would pitch ideas.

“Everyone I spoke to said the producers are working together and welcome new ideas.

However, they have been down this road so many times and they have a responsibility to protect the long-term interests of the franchise.”

Of course, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter John Hodge famously left Bond 25 due to “creative differences,” although the author is in the dark about what happened behind the scenes with that particular lost Bond adventure.

Nevertheless, Edlitz said, “But the Daniel Craig Bond movies took risks that would seem unfathomable to some years ago.”

On where the Bond franchise might go, he added, “I think EON is clearly interested in experimenting and pushing the boundaries of what’s expected in a Bond film.”

No Time To Die will hit UK cinemas on September 30, 2021.
