Struggling to get online this morning? It’s not just you. Sky Broadband – one of the UK’s largest providers – is facing a massive outage that has left thousands of frustrated customers unable to get online. Social media is full of complaints from Sky Broadband customers, who are unable to work from home, access online banking services, send or receive WhatsApp messages or back up their devices . Unfortunately, there is no word on what exactly is causing the problems, which seem to affect people in the UK.

NOW, formerly NOW TV, broadband customers are experiencing the same issues as the company is owned and operated by Sky.

Sky has confirmed that its broadband service is experiencing problems. In an update of his status page, who notifies customers of any planned downtime or issues with their services, confirmed: “Online Banking services are currently experiencing technical issues. We are currently investigating the issue.” The confirmation of issues appears to be related to the hundreds of HSBC, TSB and First Direct customers currently unable to log into their mobile or online banking apps.

In a separate post via the @SkyHelpTeam account on Twitter, Sky confirmed that broadband customers are experiencing problems trying to access “some websites”. It’s unclear whether the company has identified the root cause of the issue and whether it is directly related to the mobile banking issue listed on its status page. Crucially, the status page has not yet been updated to reflect the issues identified by the @SkyHelpTeam account on social media.

Independent service Downward Detector, which monitors the performance of websites and online services by tracking social media mentions, showed a huge spike in complaints from unhappy Sky Broadband customers an hour ago. At its peak, more than 1,300 customers had complaints about the service every minute.

Using the geolocation data associated with these social media posts, it is possible to map complaints in the UK. According to Down Detectors, the broadband problems are affecting people across the UK, with the highest concentration in London, Manchester and Glasgow.

Astonishingly, the issues surrounding Sky Broadband this morning don’t just extend to customers who can’t get online with their home Wi-Fi connection… but a number of companies have also raised complaints. One company, Gold Solutions Plating, tweeted: “We are experiencing some technical issues with our website. The problem seems to be when connected @SkyUK and not through another provider.” It is unclear whether this is a separate issue or related to the same malfunction.

Other companies, such as the popular website hosting service SquareSpace, have confirmed that their online tools are not available to those currently using Sky Broadband. Some customers had mistakenly believed that SquareSpace itself was experiencing an outage, which the company denied.
