If you’re struggling with slow download speeds, there’s good news. While BT, Sky and Virgin Media are slowly rolling out the next generation of fiber broadband connections across the country, they aren’t always the most affordable options – especially if you want speeds close to a gigabit.

Broadband company Trooli is building its own broadband network to challenge the likes of Virgin Media and BT’s Openreach, which is used by Sky, BT, Vodafone, EE and more. In the latest funding round, Trooli has raised £67.5 million to fuel expansion in rural and semi-rural communities.

According to Trooli, the new funds will enable the company to expand to 400,000 new buildings in 300 cities and towns. As it stands, Trooli is now delivering gigabit-capable broadband to more than 100,000 buildings, which will rise to 170,000 by the end of 2021, 400,000 by the time we start the countdown on New Year’s Eve next year, and one million in 2024.

This large-scale rollout of all-fiberglass will create some 200 new jobs, Trooli has confirmed. The latest round of funding was secured due to rising demand for faster fiber broadband – especially in rural areas, which are underserved by faster broadband connections – while millions continue to work from home.

The company, which has a growing customer base in Kent, East Sussex and Berkshire, has just launched in East Anglia, where the network will go live this fall. Trooli’s future-proof fiber infrastructure unlocks speeds that are 13 times faster than the average download speeds in the UK, while Trooli’s service brings a full fiber connection directly to a customer’s property with guaranteed speeds of 300, 500 or 900 Mbps, depending on the chosen product .

Ashley Atkins, CFO of the Kent-based company, said: “We are committed to expanding our network and meeting the need for really fast, reliable internet connections, especially in deprived rural areas. Securing this level of funding will not only support our ambitious growth plans, but also a vote of confidence in Trooli as a company and the product we offer.

“Demand for our full fiber broadband has been extremely strong over the past year and we expect this to continue in the future. Despite having a small, focused process, the supply is many times oversubscribed. This new investment clearly demonstrates that the banking community shares our vision.”

Trooli is one of the new providers challenging well-known brands such as BT, Virgin Media, Vodafone and Sky. It remains to be seen whether these companies can connect customers to next-generation cables faster than Openreach can replace aging copper cables with full-fibre.
