Amazon Echo update gives Alexa fans new voice commands to try

Amazon has updated its chatty AI assistant Alexa with new knowledge about the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, so fans can find the latest results, medal counts and more with a voice command. The update was launched earlier this week to coincide with the start of the sporting event, which ends on September 5, 2021.

The team behind the hands-free assistant has adapted the voice commands to give easy access to the latest successes from Great Britain and Ireland in August.

Asking “Alexa, what is the Paralympics update?” will lead to a short briefing with the latest news from Tokyo. Of course, if you want to know more about the details, you can ask about the fate of a particular country by asking: “Alexa, what is [insert team name] Paralympic update?”. Amazon says its smart assistant will be notified of the latest results so you can see the number of medals once the event is over.

To check the progress in the medal lists, you can ask “Alexa, what is the number of medals?” to find out who is currently on stage.

As always, all of these commands require you to use the wake word “Alexa”. This acts as a verbal ‘on’ button for the speaker, preparing them to listen to what you are about to ask and prepare an answer. If you’re not a fan of the name “Alexa,” or have someone in your house who shares their name with the best-selling AI speaker system, you can switch between a few other wake words in the Alexa app on iPhone or Android.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics update is now available in Amazon Echo smart speakers, as well as all other devices with Alexa built-in. That includes some popular smartphones, Amazon’s Fire TV streaming set-top boxes, cars, and even a microwave.

Questions customers can ask Alexa about the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games include:

  • “Alexa, what happened at the Paralympics?”
  • “Alexa, what’s the Paralympics update?”
  • “Alexa, what is the Paralympics GB update?”
  • “Alexa, what’s the Paralympics Ireland update?”
  • “Alexa, what’s the medal count?”

In addition to the latest Paralympics-specific tweaks, it’s worth remembering that Alexa can also get knowledge from the Internet. So if you’re not sure about the rules surrounding a particular event, Tokyo’s geography, or anything else that comes to mind while watching the latest sports action… it’s worth testing Alexa anyway. Chances are, the AI helper can provide an answer.
