A new Fortnite update will be launched tonight, with Epic Games bringing important news about maintenance and downtime.

The big news is that Fortnite servers were taken offline for maintenance on Fortnite Season 8 in the early hours of Monday morning, September 13.

Today’s situation is a bit different as Epic Games plans to launch Chapter 2 Season 8 after it’s completed.

But from what has been shared so far, the Fortnite servers are currently down and will continue to be serviced later today.

So maintenance will be done in two parts, which will likely prevent gamers from playing in the UK for most of the morning.

Fortnite downtime means the game will be unplayable as long as the team has to implement the next update.

And this week’s Fortnite downtime is extending due to the Season 8 launch; the good news is that when servers go back online, there will be a ton of new content to check out on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, PC, and mobile platforms.

This follows a major Fortnite event called Operation Sky Fire, which made major changes to the overarching story leading up to Season 8.

Fortnite’s downtime for Season 8 has already started, but the current countdown timer that’s displayed will disappear and the servers will shut down completely, at 7am.

So while the game isn’t playable at the moment, Epic Games has warned that it will take more downtime to complete everything.

That means Fortnite maintenance for Season 8 will continue after 7 a.m. BST and may continue for several hours after that.

The latest message from Epic Games reads: “Cubes are currently taking over Fortnite as a result of Operation: Sky Fire, shaping the next season…

“Server downtime for Chapter 2 Season 8 (v18.00) will begin September 13 at 02:00 ET (06:00 UTC). Stay tuned for updates!

“During this Cube takeover, you will not be able to play Fortnite until the server goes down. Prepare to defend the island!

“Note: With the launch of the new season, patch sizes will be larger than usual on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.”

We don’t have an exact time for how long the Fortnite servers will be offline, but based on past launches, we expect Fortnite Season 8 to be playable before 1pm BST.

Today gamers saw the Fortnite Mothership blown to pieces and that is expected to make some big changes to the current map.

There will also be a new Battle Pass for sale on September 13, as well as a new update for download.

And as confirmed by Epic Games above, the new download will be bigger than usual due to all the new stuff coming to the game.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 will begin on Monday, September 13, after Fortnite maintenance is completed.
