How China affects the global gaming market

Recent articles

With a new video, Ilyass illuminates Alaoui on his channel every game a storyhow the game industry is responding to China’s sensitivities. But also where the major influence that China has on the game world actually comes from.

Starting with the scandal surrounding Hearthstone player Blitzchung, who showed solidarity with protests in Hong Kong and was subsequently banned from Activision Blizzard’s game and tournaments.

From the former console ban in China and the invention of the free-to-play model, to the influence that tech giants like Tencent and NetEase have now had.

And finally, it’s about the hurdles that Chinese and especially Western companies have to overcome in order to publish on the huge Chinese market. Non-compete clauses, approval processes and censorship – as well as self-censorship.

In the end, it’s only logical how Tencent has become so big. Like western companies, it suffers from the regulations in China, but it also benefits enormously. Tencent is the gateway to Riot Games, Activision Blizzard, Epic Games, Ubisoft, PlatinumGames and Marvelous.

Tencent now owns shares in all of these companies. And it’s not just these companies that may be thinking more and more so as not to displease Beijing and make money in the huge Chinese market.

A Tibetan flag in life is strange: true colors? Probably only as long as you don’t want to take any of the big pie from the Chinese market. Dedication is a good example of the power of Chinese influence.
