Developers working on 4K games for a Nintendo console that doesn’t exist

Recent articles

When Nintendo introduced the new Nintendo Switch OLED, many Nintendo fans were surprised and disappointed. Previously, there were numerous reports of a “Nintendo Switch Pro”, which should be technically better and even offer 4K support.

But even more surprised, according to Bloomberg, were the developers who had already worked on 4K games with a software toolkit that Nintendo had given them. if Bloomberg reports:, at least 11 companies, including Zynga, have used Nintendo tools for 4K Switch games and a console that doesn’t even exist.

Bloomberg can confirm at least 11 studios

According to sources from Takashi Mochizuki and Olga Kharif, teams from 11 game companies are working with the 4K development kits for the Switch. The companies are spread all over the world, from large publishing houses to small studios. The report specifically mentions Zynga.

Bloomberg and Mochizuki insist that this Switch, which can also display 4K games, is still part of Nintendo’s plans. It will not be published until the end of 2022 at the earliest, according to sources who have entrusted the case to Bloomberg.

Nintendo and Zynga immediately deny

Nintendo dismissed a list of questions about this reporting to Bloomberg as “inaccurate”. On Twitter a statement was circulated shortly after the article was published.

The message that Nintendo provides tools to advance game development for a Nintendo Switch with 4K support is “wrong” and does not correspond to the truth. Zynga spokeswoman Sarah Ross also made it clear that the company “does not have a 4K developer kit from Nintendo”.

The 4K switch has a long history

Bloomberg has been reporting on a new switch for over a year, which should include a larger OLED screen. As is known, this has turned out to be the case. Originally, a fast chip from Nvidia was also planned to enable 4K graphics on the TV. According to Bloomberg, the reason the plans have changed is the shortage of components during the coronavirus pandemic, which not only Nintendo is struggling with.

Obviously the original plans would have been more competitive than the Switch OLED. The technical gap with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series is widening, even if the Switch is still successful at the moment.

Nevertheless, Bloomberg admits that there may never be a 4K switch. Nintendo has often delayed products for strategic reasons or technical challenges. As an example, Bloomberg mentions the sleeping gadget, which Nintendo even officially announced in 2014 and which never appeared.

This strategy is of course also used in video games. For example, Pikmin 4 has been “nearly done” for years, and lately there have been rumors that a Metroid Prime Trilogy is just waiting for the right moment.
