Over a year ago, Crunchyroll and Adult Swim announced an anime adaptation of Shenmue. Some of them may not have had that on their radar now. The first trailer is out today Shenmue the animation, which also determines the start of broadcasts for the following year.
13-episode anime series from the Sega cult series
The series should offer 13 episodes. Telecom Animation Film, which was already responsible for Tower of God and Lupine the Third: Part 5, was hired for the animation work. Chikara Sakurai takes the director’s chair (Magimoji Rurumo, One Punch Man S2). But Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki is also on board and is supervising the production as an executive producer.
Shenmue originally appeared on Sega’s Dreamcast in 1999. The sequel Shenmue II followed two years later. In November 2019, Shenmue III appeared 18 years after the second entry. Shenmue is based on the Sega game franchise and follows the story of Ryo Hazuki. After witnessing his father’s murder in the family dojo, Ryo dedicates his life to finding the person responsible – a mission that takes him from the streets of Yokosuka in Japan to the sprawling metropolis of Hong Kong and beyond. He soon learns that greater, mythical powers are at play. Meanwhile, he trains to become the ultimate martial artist seeking revenge.
