Director Naoki Yoshida commented on the success of the MMORPG at the Final Fantasy XIV media event, where we also got to play the new Endwalker expansion. That was not always foreseeable. When the MMORPG first launched, it received scathing reviews and threatened to become an expensive megaflop.

After 11 years, Final Fantasy XIV has now reached 24 million players and Yoshida describes the game as the most profitable in the history of the Final Fantasy series. In 2015, there were only 4 million players, but with the third expansion, Stormblood, there were 10 million. By this time, at the latest, Final Fantasy XIV was on its way to success, and the number of players doubled again over the next four years.

“You all know how hard it was with the original Final Fantasy XIV,” says Yoshida, referring to the infamous start of the MMORPG. “Since then, we’ve been able to turn the title into a game that makes a huge contribution to business results.”

Since May, Final Fantasy XIV is also playable on PlayStation 5 with all its benefits. Endwalker will officially launch on November 23, 2021. Square Enix recently showcased the new runways in a video.

Endwalker concludes the Hydaelyn and Zodiark story. The story will confront Warriors of Light with a disaster that surpasses anything seen before. Her journey takes her to the most remote corners of Hydaelyn and even to the moon. But Endwalker not only completes the storyline that started with A Realm Reborn, but also marks a new beginning for the popular MMO. The expansion thus clears the stage for a new adventure that will delight old fans and new players alike.
