After the surprise announcement at Tokyo Game Show 2021, Square Enix is out today Dungeon Encounters. You get access to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC-Steam, with 20% off at launch. It is a dungeon RPG written by Hiroyuki Ito and Hiroaki Kato.
For the game design it can be seen: Hiroyuki Ito responsible, who is, among other things, the man behind Active Time Battle. As a director, he was behind Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy XII. He was involved in the battle design of Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Hiroyuki Ito will be the director of Dungeon Encounters, while Hiroaki Kato will be the producer. You might also know the character design: it comes from Ryoma Ito, who was involved in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, among other things. The music is provided by Nobuo Uematsu.
The game takes place on a simplified game board, but comes with some tactical challenges. The battles are also optically represented in a simple way. Here the puzzle and strategy seem to be in the foreground. The basis for this should be a “polished and refined interpretation of the classic ATB system”.
The title puts players’ strategic skills to the test with 100 challenging levels. You move on a 2D grid and lead expeditions to explore the depths of an unusual maze. Players must prepare to overcome countless obstacles, win battles and defeat monsters to outwit the smart game system and reach the lowest level of the dungeon. You have to be strategic to survive!
