Will the PS5 stock shortages end soon? Signs that the tide is turning (Image: SONY)

It’s been nearly a year since the PS5 first launched, and stock hunters still need Ocean’s Eleven planning levels to secure an order in a restock. There are admittedly more PS5 additions today than when the Sony console launched last November and in the months that followed. But anyone looking to buy a PlayStation 5 will still need to plan ahead, make sure they’re with a computer as soon as a replenishment becomes available, and use lightning-quick reactions to jump on any stock drops as quickly as possible.

While the PS5 certainly won’t be out of stock all the time, there are signs that the tide is turning the console’s ongoing shortages. In September, the PS5 managed to break the Nintendo Switch’s 33-month streak as the top-selling console in the US. This news was revealed by Mat Piscatella, executive director of retail analytics firm The NPD Group. In a thread Today on Twitter, Piscatella revealed that the PS5 beat the Switch last month in terms of units sold and total dollar sales.

Argos was the other best place to buy a PS5 in the UK this year. One of the best things about ordering a PS5 from Argos is that customers were able to pick up a shiny new PS5 console from their local Argos store not too long after placing their order.

The last time any other platform beat the Switch in monthly sales in the US was the PS4 in November 2018.

For the year so far, the PS5 has been the best-selling console in the US in terms of dollar sales, while the Switch has sold the largest number of units.

Piscatella said: “US NPD HW – PlayStation 5 was September’s best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars. PlayStation 5 is the best-selling hardware platform from 2021 so far in dollars, while Nintendo Switch leads in units.

US NPD HW – September 2021 establishes the remarkable streak of 33 consecutive months that Nintendo Switch was the market leading platform in hardware unit sales. November 2018 was the last month that any platform other than Nintendo Switch led the market in unit sales (PlayStation 4).”

The PS5 beating the Switch this year in terms of dollar sales may not seem that surprising given how much more the PS5’s price is than the Switch.

But the PS5 beating the Switch only on units sold in September is a turnout for the books, especially given the PlayStation 5’s ongoing inventory shortages – and how readily available the Switch is.

Hopefully it’s a sign that Sony is managing to produce a lot more PS5 these days, and fingers crossed that this continues and continues to improve.

In other sales news, VGChartz in a message online has provided an update on the latest sales figures for the console market.

And according to recent figures, the PS5 is said to have sold nearly five million more consoles than the Xbox Series X and S.

VGChartz said that by October 9, 2021, the PS5 had sold an estimated 12.73 million units since launch.

While the Xbox Series X and S – which hit the shelves before the PS5 – have sold 7.78 million units in its lifetime.

However, the Nintendo Switch is expected to have sold 92.45 million units since its launch in 2017.

It means the Switch shouldn’t be too far from overtaking the Nintendo Wii as the best-selling Ninty console of all time.

The Wii has sold 101.63 million units in its lifetime.

Once the Switch overtakes the Wii, it will become the sixth best-selling console of all time.
