NetEase Games Acquires Suda51 Studio Grasshopper Manufacture

Chinese gaming giant Netease Games just bought Grasshopper Manufacture proclaimed. The studio Grasshopper Manufacture, led by Goichi “Suda51” Suda, was most recently responsible for the No More Heroes series. Until now, Grasshopper Manufacture was part of GungHo Online Entertainment.

The goal of the partnership is to create “unique console games,” three games over the next ten years. Grasshopper Manufacture also emphasizes that they remain true to their style and that NetEase as a reliable partner should take over the financing. But there must also be artistic and technical support.

NetEase emphasizes that they want to give Suda51 creative freedom. The goal is to “unleash the potential of outstanding developers”. You have tens of thousands of developers in your own community for that.

NetEase is on the rise

NetEase was last in talks due to the alleged arrival of Toshihiro Nagoshi from Sega. That this is leaving Sega is now official. NetEase Games has already launched in Summer 2020 in Shibuya led by Bandai-Namco veterans Tetsuya Akatsuka founded the Ouka Studio.

NetEase Games is not the only Chinese company investing in the Japanese video game market. Tencent’s interests in PlatinumGames and Marvelous also caused a stir.
