Few are as sure as the next Super Mario. The Switch is already pretty well served with Mario games. The successful Super Mario Odyssey exists as well as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, which was also a new game for many Switch players.

As a gift, Nintendo will definitely be working on the next 3D Mario. In a question-and-answer session following the presentation of current company figures, Shigeru Miyamoto was asked about a new Super Mario adventure. Specifically, it was about the difference between the 2D and 3D games in the series.

“Let me explain by explaining the background behind the development of the Wii game New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which was released in 2009,” says Miyamoto. “Back then, it felt like every time we made a new installment in the Super Mario series — which has since been expanded to include 3D — it got more complicated.”

Balance between new elements and fun

And by that he doesn’t mean working on the game, but the difficulty level for players. Because: “After the release of Super Mario Galaxy in 2007, the goal was to make a more accessible 3D Super Mario game [sic] develop. The result was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a simple Mario side-scroller that was easy to play even by completely new players,” says Miyamoto. “This later led to the release of an even simpler game: Super Mario Run,” explains Miyamoto.

“When developing new software, we strive to build in new elements, but at the same time make it fun for beginners. Lately, people of all generations have been enjoying Super Mario Odyssey,” said Miyamoto.

Apparently you feel confirmed here regarding the balance between difficulty, new elements and fun. “That’s why we want to try to expand 3D Mario games in new ways in the future.” Guess what, will we still see the next 3D Mario on the Switch?
