Final Fantasy XV Celebrates Its 5th Anniversary

Recent articles

Final Fantasy XV was released five years ago today. Square Enix is also commemorating this today with a Tweet. The five years before it was released were just as unusual and extraordinary as the five years after it was released.

But of course the story goes back much longer. Development of the game began in 2006, shortly before it was announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII at E3 2006. Especially the story of the game shows the many years, many personnel and many changes.

Years after its release, Square Enix continued to tinker with Final Fantasy XV. After a first season pass that featured the characters Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, Square Enix announced four more DLCs in 2018 under the auspicious title “The Dawn of the Future”.

Until after two years it came to an inglorious end. Hajime Tabata left the company and the 2nd anniversary celebration was used to destroy three of the four other DLCs. The DLC episodes for Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis have been removed without replacement.

Square Enix later published with Final Fantasy XV: The Dawn of the Future* (of all times offered today) a book that reproduced the planned events for these DLCs, at least in text form, thus filling some gaps. If you are still interested in it as a FF XV player.

Then came out in March 2021, only this year Final Fantasy XV: The Official Works* in the West. It was the last piece of a large, unfinished puzzle. There is a chronology around Final Fantasy XV, in which both the announcement (Final Fantasy Versus XIII) and the demo episode Duscae and the Platinum demo are mentioned. And of course the rest of the FF-XV universe like Brotherhood and Kingsglaive.

Final Fantasy XV holds an exceptional place in Final Fantasy history. Many of you – including us – have waited a third of their lives to play this game. Many fans liked it, so did the press. Still, many will always feel that the game could have been a lot better.

I still remember how weird the last quarter of the game was. And how meaningful story cuts were told to me completely casually, considerably abbreviated and apparently by chance. I really liked the boy group around Noctis. I would have loved to see Final Fantasy XV with all the content it should have.

In celebration of today’s anniversary, Square Enix has released the soundtrack for the game across several streaming providers accessible created. Feel free to share your memories!
