Today is not only Sinterklaas day, but also the 20th birthday of ICO. At least in Japan. In North America, Fumito Ueda’s game was released a little earlier for PlayStation 2, and a little later in Europe.

The former ICO team no longer exists, Ueda now has its own studio with genDESIGN. But today we look back to the time when ICO was still in development.

This is what ICO looked like in 1998

In particular, we see what the game looked like around 1998. The video was used internally to share the concept with the development team. In addition to gameplay snippets, animations, and some debug information, you can also spot one or the other technical flaws, which of course were of minor importance for the purpose.

All this was left without editing the video. So the “coming soon” shouldn’t lead to wrong conclusions in the end. The choice of music is also a bit special with the song “Summer Holiday” by the band Momus.

Ueda’s new work is still unknown

What we are currently working on at genDESIGN is still unknown. We have been working on a new project for a long time, which was alluded to in March 2018. The year 2021 started with a work of art, which probably gives a first insight. You are also known to already use Epic Games found a publisher.
