The PlayStation VR2 launches as a new virtual reality headset that will deliver next-gen experiences on the PS5.

Sony officially announced the new project today, having previously confirmed they were working on new PSVR technology.

The PlayStation VR2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but there’s a good chance it will hit shelves between 2022 and 2023.

And while Sony did its best to answer some big questions about the technology powering the new virtual reality device, they missed one key point; Will the PlayStation VR2 offer backwards compatibility?

Sony’s first big reveal for the PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation VR2 Sense controller includes specs and games to expect, with Sony telling fans:

“PlayStation VR2 takes VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before.

“With the headset on and the controllers in hand, players will feel a greater range of sensations than any other – thanks to the creativity of the game worlds built by our world-class developers and the latest technology incorporated into the hardware.”

It also came with these feature reveals, including the following options:

Visual fidelity: For a high-fidelity visual experience, PS VR2 offers 4K HDR, a 110-degree field of view and foveated rendering. With an OLED screen, players can expect a screen resolution of 2000×2040 per eye and smooth frame rates of 90/120Hz.

Headset-based controller tracking: With inside-out tracking, PS VR2 tracks you and your controller through integrated cameras built into the VR headset. Your movements and the direction you look are reflected in the game without the need for an external camera.

New sensory features: PS VR2 Sense technology combines eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D audio and the innovative PS VR2 Sense controller to create an incredibly deep sense of immersion. Headset feedback is a new sensory feature that enhances the sensations of the player’s in-game actions. It is made by a single built-in engine with vibration that adds an intelligent tactile element, bringing players closer to the gameplay experience.

Eye tracking: With eye tracking, PS VR2 detects the movement of your eyes, so a simple glance in a certain direction can create an additional input for the game character. This allows players to interact with each other more intuitively and in new and lifelike ways, enabling increased emotional response and enhanced expression, bringing a new level of realism to gaming.

But at this point, Sony has not shared any news about whether PlayStation VR1 games will be backwards compatible on the new device.

News on the subject is expected to be shared before the new device hits shelves, and it could have a huge impact on how many people choose to upgrade.
