Gamers have less than a week to get ready before the next big Apex Legends event kicks off on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

Developers Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that the Dark Depths will open next week and will allow gamers to unlock new skins and explore a new Arenas map called Habitat.

For those who may not have jumped into Apex Legends in a while, Arenas is a game mode that was added last year and is a permanent mode.

This means that even when temporary events occur, the mode itself is never removed from the game.

Arenas drastically reduces the number of squads from 20 to just 2, yielding a 3v3 battle setup, with teams taking on the enemy without any other squads coming and crashing the party over several rounds.

Another major difference is that before each round starts, you use materials earned during the previous round to get and upgrade weapons, as well as ammunition and healing supplies.

And for fans of the new mode, the Dark Depths will add the next map to battle on, introducing the small island of Storm Point to the game.

A message from Respawn provides more information about the new location, telling fans, “Storm Point is just one of many islands in the New Antillia archipelago.

“Habitat 4 is one of the smallest islands in the chain and is best known as a Leviathan breeding ground. Early IMC research groups were surprised to find that a large population of local Leviathans moved to the island, and identified Habitat 4 as an ethological base to study the creatures’ behavior. It’s been over a century since, and while the IMC is gone, the gentle giants they studied remain here.

“Habitat 4 is inspired by Leviathans and what it would feel like to fight in their breeding grounds. It represents our vision of an arena established in a natural environment, while staying true to the tent poles of the arena design. That said, one of the main features of Habitat 4 is a large waterfall. Over time, it has eroded the landscape, forming trenches and terraces of varying heights. Making this island a paradise for slides and quick getaways.”

The surprise new Apex Legends event was announced today, and Respawn confirmed that Dark Depths will kick off on January 11, meaning fans have less than a week to get ready.

The event also features new challenges to complete and cosmetic items to unlock, including the following features:

Flash events during Dark Depths are essentially individual prize tracks per week. So every week there is a new set of unique prizes + 1 unique badge that players can earn by completing challenges. Here’s an overview of some of the rewards that will be available each week.

New to this event are special limited-time Dark Depths packs. For 400 Apex Coins, players can get an Event Thematic Pack that is guaranteed to contain a non-dupe event-limited item.

Dark Depths packs will be available for a limited time during the Dark Depths event, but the items will always be available in the standard Apex Pack collection of items.

However, Dark Depths Packs guarantee you one non-duplicate Dark Depths Thematic Event item.
