Krafton has confirmed that they will be launching one of the most comprehensive PUBG updates to date on January 12, after a very long period of maintenance.

At the moment PUBG is not playable and will remain offline until maintenance is complete on PC, Xbox and PlayStation.

The good news is that when everything is done, gamers will be able to enjoy PUBG Battlegrounds for free on whatever platform they choose.

That’s the most notable feature to be added to the game this week, but it’s not the only thing you need to know.

An announcement from Krafton explains: “After this unprecedented success, BATTLEGROUNDS made its way to multiple other platforms, expanding to both console and mobile players. But now it’s time for BATTLEGROUNDS to take the biggest leap of all; Free to play.

“BATTLEGROUNDS Free-to-play now gives us the opportunity to expand our community even more and bring all the excitement of the game to everyone, while making new friends, faster matchmaking and, let’s face it, more goals for our existing provide a player base.

“BATTLEGROUNDS Free-to-play will also include some of the improvements we’ve been working on that fans will see rolling out at launch and in the months to come. This really is the best time to play, so check out the details below, get ready to join your squad, come by and share that chicken dinner with as many friends as you can.”

And here’s what else is scheduled to launch this week as part of the major PUBG 15.2 update going live:

GAMEPLAY UPDATES

NEW FEATURE: TACTICAL EQUIPMENT

We have decided to introduce a whole new category of tactical items, Tactical Gear, which diverges from pure gunplay to provide our players with different options to improve their in-game performance.

As Tactical Gear will take over players’ primary weapon slots, we hope this will allow players to come up with more creative long-term strategies.

TACTICAL EQUIPMENT: DRONE

The drone is a tactical piece of equipment that allows players to safely explore a long distance and even pick up an item without running the risk of direct combat.

Drones spawn on every map.

  • Drones are available in Normal Matches, Custom Games, Training Mode, and Sandbox Mode.

  • Once players have looted and equipped the drone, they can hold the drone tablet in their hands.

  • Players can then toggle in and out of Drone View.

    • The drone will launch into the air once players switch to Drone View.

    • A drone in flight makes noise and has a distinctive flashing light.

    • A deployed drone is identified by a unique drone icon, both on the map and on the minimap.

    • In Drone View, players’ characters stop moving and give up control of their bodies as they fly around in the drone’s perspective.

    • If players turn off the drone view, the drone will hover at its current position.

  • Players can recall a drone in flight.

    • When a recall is initiated, the drone attempts to fly back in a straight line to where the player recalled it.

    • The drone flies back to the location where the player first summoned it.

    • While the recall is in progress, the recall will stop if the player tries to use the drone tablet.

    • While the recall is in progress, the recall will stop if the player uses the recall function again.

    • The drone cannot dodge obstacles or move through fixed objects while being summoned.

  • The drone has a large action radius of 300 meters in which players must stay while flying the drone.

    • The drone warns players with a warning message and a static screen when it is within 90 meters of its maximum range.

    • If the drone leaves its range, it will be destroyed and players must retrieve it and repair the drone to use it again.

  • The Drone has a maximum HP of 35 and can take damage from a variety of things.

    • A drone can be damaged by:

      • gunfire

      • explosions

      • Firework

      • Water

      • Flying outside the operating radius

      • Vehicle collision

    • When the drone’s HP reaches 0, it falls to the ground and is destroyed. Players must retrieve and repair the drone to use it again.

  • A drone can loot a single item in its single inventory slot.

    • For example, a stack of bandages (5) is also considered a single item.

    • Drones cannot retrieve items from care packs, deathboxes and suitcases.

    • Players in Drone View can also drop the held item at any time.

    • Players can receive the held item from the drone by recalling the drone.

  • Players can ping normally while in Drone View.

    • The ping icon appears as a regular ping.

NEW MODE: TUTORIALS

In order to create a richer gameplay experience for not only new players but also returning players, we add two in-game tutorial modes that provide a step-by-step process. As for returning players who haven’t used our game in months, these tutorials will help you revive your rusty combat skills before you’re ready to jump back into action.

ACTION IN THE queue

The Action Queue feature allows players to queue their next desired action by holding down the button while a particular action is in progress. The action will be executed immediately after the ongoing action has ended. For example, if you hold down the fire button while reloading, the gun will fire immediately after the reload is over. We’ve already applied several action queues, but we want to respond to a long-requested feedback from the community by applying them to more cases to improve the flexibility and responsiveness of the game controller.

MINIMAP IMPROVEMENTS

We’ve improved the quality of the minimap to make the terrain more intuitive. We applied the same quality of curves in the map to the mini-map. In addition, the bridges are displayed in the same way as the roads.
