Xbox boss sees PlayStation’s Game Pass competitor as “inevitable”

Phil Spencer has the opposite IGN (through VGC) expressed that he expects Sony PlayStation to follow the path of Xbox and Xbox Game Pass. They’re going to set up a rival service, Spencer is sure of it.

That’s an open industry secret anyway, at least according to the December Bloomberg report. With Project Spartacus, the Game Pass competition is scheduled to start in the spring of 2022. Pawnoffer should therefore be PlayStation Now.

IGN confronted Phil Spencer head on about the rumors of Sony’s competitor service, who replied that he thinks a Game Pass-like service is “inevitable” and expects it to make new releases available for subscription on day one as well.

It’s “the right answer”

“Not to sound like we figured out how it works. But I think the right answer is to let your customers play the games they want, where they want [die Spiele] want to play and give them choices in how they build their library,” said Spencer.

He knows very well that he is not only giving his opinion, but also informing PlayStation fans about what to expect. Because Xbox Game Pass has it all.

Spencer wouldn’t necessarily see this as an endorsement of his own work. On the contrary, he would have already spoken to the teams about the fact that it would probably be unavoidable. “So we have to keep innovating, keep competing, because maybe the things we’re doing are advantages that we have in the market today.” Things we need to push first. Not things that no one else can do.

Delivering stuff to PC, delivering stuff to console, and delivering stuff to the cloud is the right answer. Make them available as a subscription on the first day. “And I expect our competitor will too,” Spencer said.
