Square Enix plans to develop “story-centric” NFTs and blockchain games

Blockchain and NFT continue to heat up emotions. Square Enix has also repeatedly expressed interest in these new technologies and has now renewed these statements once again.

The fact is that Square Enix does invest – but not necessarily at the expense of classic video games. However, the company’s medium-term goals also include blockchain game development and the development of “story-focused” NFTs. This follows from the plans, quoted in the Shareholders’ Report 2022, from

Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda also spoke about the company’s arguably biggest brands, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Fans need not fear here. “It’s still a little early to develop Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy blockchain games and we’re not ready to think about it yet.”

Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda already expressed his great enthusiasm for blockchain games, NFT and the Metaverse in the New Year’s letter. The stock rose 8 percent. Other than a few relatively unnoticed NFTs for the mobile game Million Arthur, Square Enix hasn’t announced any concrete projects so far.
