A trailer for the upcoming Need for Speed game will be released in only two days, nearly three years after the release of Need for Speed: Heat, the most recent installment in Electronic Arts’ renowned arcade racing series. A little information about the title has seeped through the cracks, even though not much has been verified. Fans won’t have to wait long to get more information, though.

Hundreds of Need for Speed fans have rushed to the pre-launch chat to discuss their aspirations for the game and their comments on the current direction of the franchise as a whole. The game’s reveal trailer is already planned to premiere on YouTube. Although opinions on the entry appear to have been somewhat divided, many have called for a return to the adrenaline-fueled street racing that many fans of Need for Speed: Underground or Need for Speed: Most Wanted fondly remember. Need for Speed: Heat was made available for free to PS Plus subscribers in September, generating quite a bit of buzz for the recently-dormant series.

While factual information about the upcoming project is still scarce, a recent leak that correctly predicted the release of a trailer also suggested that the next installment would be called Need for Speed: Unbound. The reveal trailer is currently scheduled to debut on October 6, 2022, at 11 AM EST. It’s also been rumored that the video would reveal a release date of December 2, 2022, and that it will somehow incorporate anime elements—something that has never been seen in the series.

That would only leave a window of three months or so between revelation and release. Although generally typical for the former-annual racing series, it seems a little out of the ordinary considering the Need for Speed franchise’s lengthy sabbatical. Additionally, it would come out at the same time as the sci-fi horror game The Callisto Protocol, which, though unrelated, would detract some attention from the much-anticipated return of Need for Speed.

Additionally, some unresolved issues with the notorious publisher Electronic Arts could prevent Need for Speed from making a comeback. For example, the publisher’s annual FIFA franchise is frequently criticized for its approach to in-game monetization. Recent releases like Need for Speed: Payback were destroyed by shoddy microtransaction schemes. Most of this problem was avoided by Need for Speed: Heat, but it did have an odd “time-saving” DLC that, for a fee, unlocked all of the game’s significant locales and items. In the end, only time will tell what the near future holds for Need for Speed fans.
