Final Fantasy XVI features six major countries, but you can’t explore them all

We already know that Final Fantasy XVI will not offer an open world. The makers had already clearly admitted this in the last interview round and also well motivated why they had made the choice.

Director Hiroshi Takai renewed this commitment in the new interview with the famitsu. It eventually decided against the open world as well, believing that fans would prefer a game with an evolving storyline instead, even given the nature of other installments in the series.

Now, of course, Final Fantasy XVI tells a story that spans multiple continents and realms. There are six realms in Valistea, which are in a global conflict. We won’t examine them all, as Naoki Yoshida explains in the Famitsu interview.

According to Yoshida, it is not primarily about traveling to different countries. Creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro adds that you follow the story and visit a country because you have a specific goal there. In some cases, cities only have a symbolic character.

How this eventually manifests itself in the finished game remains to be seen. However, since it was recently announced that Final Fantasy XVI is not an open-world RPG, the expectation of freely explorable continents and countries should have been limited anyway.
