The department and eight US states, including California and New York, are asking the court to find the company guilty of violating competition laws, order it to pay damages and order it to limit its online advertising sales activities .
The complaint alleges that Google controls the technologies used by “virtually all websites” to sell banner ads or pop-ups to brands, as well as the tools advertisers use to buy these spaces and the marketplace in which the transactions take place.
The complainants say that “more than 13 billion ads are sold each day” on the Internet in the United States.
They argue that Google has abused its position to shut out its competitors, notably by “systematically taking control of a variety of high-tech tools used by publishers, advertisers and other market participants.”
“The harms are obvious: Website publishers earn less and advertisers spend more,” the complaint adds. Google has already been fined for violating competition law, notably by the European Union. In the United States, the company is facing lawsuits filed in late 2020 by several states, most notably Texas.
