Xbox Cloud Gaming clearly dominates the cloud market

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has revealed a clear 60-70% dominance of Microsoft with Xbox Cloud Gaming in the cloud market, providing in the process of analyzing the acquisition of Activision Blizzard a percentage of the market share. each cloud service in the period 2021-2022.

This report, prepared by the UK competition authority, was derived from a monthly active user base, with the paper explaining that these figures are based on information provided directly by the respective companies and are therefore considered highly reliable. These percentages also reflect global usage, not just the UK population.

Below, however, you will find the data shared by CMA, pointing out how xCloud includes various Microsoft services, in particular Game Pass Ultimate, and the latter is the reason for the incredible growth seen last year.

Cloud gaming market share in 2021:

  • xCloud: 20-30%
  • Cloud gaming on PlayStation: 30-40%
  • Nvidia GFN: 20-30%
  • Google Stage: 5-10%

Cloud gaming market share in 2022:

  • xCloud: 60-70%
  • Cloud gaming on PlayStation: 10-20%
  • NVIDIA GFN: 10-20%
  • Google Stage: 0-5%
  • Amazon Moon: 0-5%

Considering this data, we can see that Google Stadia didn’t start out so badly, but the following year, the number of users even collapsed, up to a complete shutdown, which occurred in early January 2023. Instead, back at Microsoft, the American giant is leading the cloud gaming market, reaching 60-70% market share last year.

And it is this data that scares the CMA, the acquisition of Activision Blizzard should allow Microsoft to even establish a monopoly in the cloud sector.
