According to Phil Spencer, head of gaming at Microsoft, the app’s launch depends on authorities accepting the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. As a result, Microsoft would have a larger selection of mobile games. Second, the app wouldn’t go live until other rules allowing for alternate iOS app stores, like the EU’s Digital Markets Act, are upheld.

Spencer told the Financial Times, “We want to offer Xbox and content from our third-party partners and us across any screen where anyone would want to play. “We can’t do it on mobile devices right now, but we want to prepare for a world where we expect those devices to be open.”

According to a December report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple was getting ready to let alternate app stores on the iPhone comply with the Digital Markets Act, which is anticipated to take effect in March 2024. According to Gurman, Apple planned to release the modifications with the iOS 17 update for iPhone customers in Europe only the following year. This implies that, at least initially, the Xbox games shop would not be accessible in the United States.

For the iPhone, Xbox already provides a cloud gaming service. But, instead of the App Store, games may only be played online. Apple’s strong control over the App Store has come under increased regulatory scrutiny, prompting it to make modifications in some nations, such as permitting alternative payments in South Korea.
