Over the past few years, Hulu has enjoyed a great deal of success with the adaptation of many books. The films “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Little Fires Everywhere,” “Normal People,” “Nine Perfect Strangers,” and “Conversations With Friends” have all managed to elicit a strong emotional response from moviegoers and have also garnered widespread praise from film critics. As a result, the decision of the streaming service to adapt Alexis Schaitkin’s novel Saint X into a miniseries should not come as much of a surprise to anyone.
Saint X was conceived and produced by Leila Gestein, who also served as the show’s main writer and was previously responsible for creating Hart of Dixie and writing for The Handmaid’s Tale. At the same time, Mudbound and Empire filmmaker Dee Rees has supervised multiple episodes of the psychological mystery thriller, including the pilot episode.

What is the Plot of Saint X?
Alexis Schaitkin’s critically acclaimed debut novel of the same name served as the inspiration for the television series Saint X. When Schaikin was given the task of coming up with a “movie poster tagline” for the book, he responded with the phrase “One mysterious night on Saint X. A chorus of people’s lives were irrevocably altered. The murder of Alison Thomas, a white teenager from an affluent and middle-class family who was on vacation with her family on the island of Saint X in the Caribbean, was the turning point in all those people’s lives. According to a press release by Hulu, the show challenges the conventions of the “girl-gone-missing genre.” The narrative skips around in time and moves between numerous settings to illustrate how a single death may cause a cascade of grief and suffering. Weekly Schaitkin mentioned the following things as some of her favorites in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“The feeling of movement switching between these two settings creates in the book: One chapter, you’re at a Caribbean resort; the next, it’s a frigid winter night in Flatbush.”
This framework has been preserved in the adaptation to the screen, with Hulu describing how the series is told as taking place across different periods. The format of a limited series ought to be an excellent choice for pursuing this kind of narrative investigation.
