According to Michael Barclay on Twitter, Star Wars Battlefront 3 was in development before EA decided to cancel the project and, to the pain of fans of the series, it would have been an “incredible” video game.
Currently the lead designer for Naughty Dog, Barkley was previously an EA developer, having worked as a level designer for Free Radical Design between 2007 and 2009. In fact, what Barkley wrote is not about 2017’s Battlefront 2, but about the original 2005 game’s cult following. , though even the most recent one seems to have met the same fate with respect to its sequel.
In a tweet in response to a missed opportunity thread in the game development world, Barkley said, “I feel like enough time has passed to be able to speak freely and say that Star Wars Battlefront 3 is going to be truly amazing, and that the fact that it was cleared only two yards from the finish line is a felony. The players don’t know what they’ve been deprived of.”
Of course, as a game developer, it’s entirely possible that Barkley’s comments on how “incredible” this was should be taken with a pinch of salt, however he’s not the first person involved in the process to say something like that, leaving questions as to why the project closed. The fact remains that no one has made an official comment on this matter, which may remain a mystery for a long time to come.
As for the future of 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront 2, it looks like a third installment isn’t in development, but given the popularity of the franchise, a sudden announcement is always possible, though it’s possible that work on a future Battlefront 3 could be by a studio other than DICE, which busy Battlefield.
I feel like enough time has passed to say that Star Wars Battlefront III is going to be truly incredible, and the fact that it was canceled 2 yards from the finish line is an absolute crime. Gamers don’t know what was stolen from them. https://t.co/zZUu8JR3iV
