DC’s 2023 Lineup: New Movies, TV Shows, And Heroes Joining The Ever-Expanding DC Universe

In 2023, Warner Bros. will release four of the forthcoming DC movies, and the studio has many more in the works at various stages of production. Beginning with the name Shazam! Despite the recent shakeups at WB and the cancellation of many DC movies and shows, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have a full slate of new DC features planned, starting with the release of “Fury of the Gods” in March. Those who are anticipating standalone DC films like “Joker: Folie à Deux” or “The Batman 2” will have a lot to look forward to in the coming years, as will fans of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). However, the future of other eagerly anticipated DC Comics movies, such as the second installment of “Man of Steel” or the continuation of “Justice League,” is now unknown.

The current lineup of films to be produced by DC Comics barely matches the blueprint for the DC Extended Universe that Warner Bros. sketched out in 2013. Movie adaptations of DC Comics, such as “Man of Steel,” “Batman v. Superman,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” and “Justice League,” did not accomplish what they set out to do. Despite this, formerly obscure characters that appeared in DC Comics movies like The Suicide Squad, Shazam!, and Black Adam were a huge hit with the crowd. The cast of DC Movies 2023 features a combination of well-known actors and up-and-coming talent. It is anticipated that the following DC films, beginning in 2024 and continuing forth, will contain an increased number of films centered on characters not members of the core Justice League cast. This is a list of every DC movie released in 2023, 2024, and beyond.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods (March 17th, 2023)

The sequel to Shazam!, scheduled to be released on March 17th, 2023, and is named Fury of the Gods, is the first film on the roster of forthcoming DC movies. Shazam! was a commercial and critical success, and its audience is hungry for more of Zachary Levi’s take on the adolescent superhero. Once again occupying the role of director is David F. Sandberg. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu have been cast in the villains Hespera and Kalypso roles by DC Films. Initially, it was anticipated that Shazam! Fury of the Gods would occupy the position for DC’s holiday season in 2022. However, in August, WB announced another adjustment to their release timetable, and Shazam 2’s new release date was set for 2023. As this article is being written, the release date for Shazam 2 is still set for March 2023.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods was released not long after Black Adam, and many people are curious whether the two films would connect in some way before either a Black Adam 2 or a Shazam! 3 (even though neither film is scheduled to appear in subsequent DC movies). Outside of the construction of the DCEU, many moviegoers are ecstatic about the fact that one of the most modern, engaging, and light-hearted superhero franchises that DC has to offer shows no indications of stopping. The character of Shazam is less well-known than others in the DC Comics universe, such as Superman. Despite this, the reception that his first big-screen outing received from critics may signal that this will change.

The Flash (June 16th, 2023)

The development of The Flash, which stars Ezra Miller in his return to the title character’s role, has been the most chaotic of all the planned DC movies. It has also gone between directors at a rate even Barry Allen would find impressive. We may breathe a sigh of relief since Andres Muschietti, the director of IT, is now in charge, and the release date has been set for June 16th, 2023. Michael Keaton’s version of Batman from the Tim Burton movies and Ben Affleck’s version of Batman from the Zack Snyder movies will appear in The Flash, introducing the multiverse to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Sasha Calle will take on the role of Supergirl in the DC Extended Universe when she is introduced in The Flash. Ron Livingston will replace Billy Crudup in the role of Barry Allen’s father, Henry Allen.

Kiersey Clemons will make her canonical DCEU debut in a story that takes inspiration from DC’s Flashpoint and begins with Barry trying to undo the death of his mother. With so much potential behind the film, The Flash could become the most important film in DC’s future. After being cut from Justice League (and then restored by the Snyder Cut), Clemons will make her canonical DCEU debut. However, due to the star’s problematic behavior, many fans are already demanding that Ezra Miller be replaced. Despite the best efforts of both WB and DC, the futures of their two most popular Justice League spin-offs, The Flash and Aquaman, have yet to be decided.

Blue Beetle (August 18th, 2023)

WB has planned to include Blue Beetle in their upcoming DC movies since late 2018. Still, development on the Blue Beetle movie didn’t start moving forward until early 2021, when Angel Manuel Soto was confirmed as the director. Before then, WB had yet to learn who would helm the film. The release date for Blue Beetle has been moved to August 18th, 2023. Since then, Soto has stated that Blue Beetle will take place within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Even though there were original rumors that it would be an HBO Max exclusive, Blue Beetle will be one of the DC movie’s theatrical releases in the year 2023. Blue Beetle is one of several new DC movies that will focus on characters that readers unfamiliar with DC Comics might not recognize, much as the upcoming Black Adam film in 2022.

Xolo Mariduea, a member of the Cobra Kai, has been chosen to play the role of the Blue Beetle himself (also known to his friends as Jaime Reyes). It was stated that filming would be completed in the middle of 2022. Raoul Trujillo, who previously appeared in the series Sicario, has been cast as Carapax, the Indestructible Man, making him a potential antagonist in Blue Beetle. Bruna Marquezine will play Jaime’s love interest Penny, and Susan Sarandon will give her talents to this 2023 DC movie as Victoria Kord, the major antagonist of the Blue Beetle movie. Susan Sarandon will play both of these roles.

Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom (December 25th, 2023)

Following closely on the heels of James Wan’s Aquaman, which grossed more than $1.14 billion worldwide at the box office, one of the most anticipated future DC movies is Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom. The date of December 25th, 2023, has been established as the release date for Aquaman 2. Wan will again serve as the film’s director, and Jason Momoa will reprise his role as Aquaman, also known as Arthur Curry. Mera, played by Amber Heard, Orm, played by Patrick Wilson, Atlanna, played by Nicole Kidman. And Black Manta, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is all set to appear in the sequel to Aquaman. The name of the next installment is believed to refer to the submerged metropolis of Necrus.

The release date for Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom has been pushed back to March 2023 following a couple of delays that were caused by wider DCEU reorganizations. Despite this, the sequel to Aquaman has been pushed back, and its new release date is December 25th, 2023. According to reports, this was done so that the visual effects team could ensure the post-production was as reliable as feasible. WB may seek to reschedule Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom to avoid being outdone by Disney’s upcoming aquatic adventure Avatar: The Way of Water. This choice was met with disapproval from a great deal of the audience. However – not only is this the most recent delay of many, but this time, Aquaman 2’s problems also forced delays to Shazam 2, which stole Aquaman 2’s prior March spot in the DC Movies 2023 timetable. This is the latest delay of many.

Doom Patrol Season 4 Part 2 (2023)

Doom Patrol has also been canceled, following in the footsteps of Titans. The conclusion of the fourth season is expected to occur later this year, although there is no release date yet.

Harley Quinn Season 4 (2023)

The conclusion of the third season of the animated Harley Quinn series hinted at the possibility of a fourth season being produced. Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that the popular animated show will continue for a fourth season. Although the product’s launch date has yet to be announced, the manufacturer has confirmed that it will be made available in 2018.
