What is the Plot of The Crowded Room?

As was said before, The Crowded Room is based on the life of Milligan and follows the intriguing case of Sullivan and an investigator’s efforts to get to the bottom of the criminal accusations that have been made against him. The show is expected to take some creative liberties, even though Milligan inspired it. When asked about Milligan’s narrative, Holland stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he and Goldman “felt like it was a more appropriate story to tell from a fictional point of view.” Instead of making Milligan seem like a sympathetic man or taking a stand on his trial, this approach would work better to adapt The Minds of Billy Milligan because it will focus more on presenting a perspective on mental health. In other words, it won’t try to make Milligan look like a victim. Because of this, the adaptation is more sensitive and respectful than works such as Monster: A Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which portrays actual crimes and their aftermaths.

This also indicates that it is necessary to clarify the extent to which Milligan’s account will be included in The Crowded Room. In the teaser, we can already see signs of certain alterations, such as the introduction of a character named Rya, who appears to be entirely fictional, and the fact that Sullivan’s crimes do not appear to involve sexual assault in the same way that Milligan’s crimes did. In addition, the DID aspect of Sullivan is concealed in the promotional materials, which suggests that it will play a role in the series more in the capacity of a plot twist than as the show’s primary focus.

It is still anticipated that The Crowded Room will contain some depiction of DID and comments on the topic. Milligan was the first person in the annals of United States history to be acquitted of criminal charges because they suffered from DID. A psychiatrist determined that he had the condition, and it was speculated that he had as many as 24 personalities. Consequently, he blamed his multiple personas, claiming that one of them had committed the acts in question without his knowledge. Following his exoneration, Milligan was admitted to a mental institution for ten years before being allowed to leave and spend the remainder of his life in seclusion.

The Crowded Room will not be the first film or television show to deal with dissociative identity disorder (DID). Previous works such as Split and Moon Knight have highlighted the condition. This series, on the other hand, will be unique because it is only partially made up. As a result, it must approach the contentious matter of Milligan with extreme caution.
