There are many movies about World War II, but there aren’t many about a heist during the war, like Kelly’s Heroes, The Train, or, more recently, The Monuments Men and Da 5 Bloods. So, it got our attention when Netflix told us that Blood & Gold (2023), a war heist movie, was coming out in 2023. The last time we saw a film like this on the streamer was in 2022 when Robbing Mussolini was made in Italy.
Blood & Gold is a movie about the end of World War II. It was written and directed by Peter Thorwarth. It tells the story of Heinrich, a German soldier who leaves his group to go home and see his daughter. Soon, he has to hide from the SS soldiers and look for hidden Gold simultaneously. Blood & Gold is billed as a dark comedy unlike most wartime stories. The trailer for the movie just came out, and it does look very exciting.
The new German movie is coming out in May. It has a great cast and team of people who worked on it and a story different from other movies. If you like heist movies, you should add this to your list. Watch the Blood & Gold Trailer
Netflix has put out the first official trailer for Blood & Gold, and the first scene shows that it won’t be a theatrical movie. It’s also worth mentioning that “Paint It, Black” by The Rolling Stones is the new favorite background music, especially for European war movies. The song was also used in another Netflix original WWII movie called Robbing Mussolini, which was also a great version of the song. It may fit better in the Blood & Gold trailer. In the opening scenes, Alexander Scheer’s Commander, von Starnfeld, is channeling Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds.
As soon as the other main character, Elsa comes into the story, these scenes go from being sad to being full of action. From then on, everyone is in a crazy, chaotic rush to get money and freedom, leaving no stone unturned to settle personal scores. Even though the movie starts with a serious idea, the story is what makes it a comedy, or more like an action comedy.
Who is the Director of Blood & Gold?
German director Peter Thorwarth made Blood & Gold, written by writer-director Stephan Barth. Thorwarth’s first movie, Bang Boom Bang, came out in 1999. It was a big step in his career, and went on to become a cult classic. He also wrote and directed the German movies The Wave, which won a Jupiter Award; what Doesn’t Fit, Will Be Made to Fit, which won a Jupiter Award; and Blood Red Sky, which is thought to be one of the most successful German films. Barth is best known for writing for movies, and T.V. shows like Motown, Ein Schnitzel für drei, Alarm für Cobra 11: Die Autobahnpolizei, and Cologne P.D.
What’s the Plot of Blood & Gold About?
Blood & Gold takes place in the spring of 1945 when World War II was almost over. It’s the story of two people who couldn’t be more different from each other. They come from different places but want to find justice and fight their common enemy. Heinrich, an SS soldier, leaves his group to go home and look for his daughter. But his commander calls him a traitor and hangs him from a tree. Elsa, a farm girl in the area, comes out of nowhere and saves him. She then hides him on her farm. They soon discover that the Nazi soldiers are also looking for a hidden stash of Gold in Elsa’s village. Their desire for the treasure causes a lot of death and chaos in the town, and a lot of dirty secrets are revealed.
Here’s the official synopsis of Netflix’s Blood & Gold:
