In Japan during the Edo period (1603–1868), a peculiar new disease known as the Redface Pox emerged to prey on the country’s male population. Within the first eighty years after the first epidemic, there was a reduction in the male population to the point that it was just a fraction of the size of the female population. Even the position of the shogun, which was previously reserved exclusively for men, has been filled by a woman. The men, regarded as priceless contributors to their existence, are given special care and protection, and the most handsome men are selected to work in the Shogun’s Inner Chambers.
