Magnificent losers still make money!
Guardians of the Galaxy has been a standout series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its inception. The third film of the franchise, which was directed by James Gunn before he left to deal with DC films, has been a roaring success both commercially and critically. Titled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, the film has already generated $528 million worldwide after its second weekend, making it a hit at the box office. It is also worth noting that the drop in attendance from one week to the next is the fourth weakest in all of MCU history, only behind Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther.
In France alone, the film attracted nearly one and a half million spectators in theaters during the first week. This figure is a lot higher than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which was judged very disappointing overall and only attracted a total of 1.5 million people in theaters in France.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is darker than the previous installments and avoids systematically defusing the dramatic tension with a schoolboy joke. It is a breath of fresh air for the franchise and allows Marvel to restore momentum to its vast cinematographic project. With the multiverse concept, everything is now possible, and it is extremely difficult to take certain situations seen in previous films for granted. This means that we are not entirely safe from finding the Guardians as we know them, discovering other versions, or even meeting a whole new team.
An entire movie dedicated to Star-Lord? Marvel has it all on hand
For the time being, Marvel and Disney have not announced anything regarding a possible Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.4. However, there are strong theories that a movie or a series will one day be dedicated to Peter Quill, the alias Star-Lord.
Recently, Chris Pratt, the actor who plays the role of Star-Lord, declared that he was all for taking over the part if the opportunity arises, but not under any conditions. He also mentioned that the project would have to be particularly solid and respectful of the work carried out by James Gunn, who is visibly appreciated by the people with whom he exercises his profession.
While several series of comics have been dedicated to Star-Lord, it is difficult to project at the moment what form a return of the Peter Quill who we know might take. It may only be through a presence in feature films dedicated to other characters. Also, a lot of the communication around Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 has highlighted the departure of James Gunn and several actors, presenting the whole thing as a kind of galactic farewell tour.
Nevertheless, Marvel can rely on several elements with a view to offering a film entirely dedicated to Star-Lord if the will is there. As the multiverse becomes a more central concept in the MCU, nothing is off the table, and it will be exciting to see what Marvel has in store for the Guardians of the Galaxy and their fans.
