The most frustrating thing about watching Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is simple: how do you pause a movie when you’re in a theater? That’s the problem almost every Spider-Man fan will have with this eye-popping, visceral, and thrilling adventure. Everywhere you look, you’ve probably already missed an Easter egg, and that’s before you even start counting the characters.
The live-action movies will be the most memorable parts for fans who aren’t as familiar with comic books. From seeing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield on the screen to hearing Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara talk about Doctor Strange on Earth-199999 (the official name for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Marvel canon), and, most shockingly, to seeing Donald Glover’s Aaron Davis, who made a cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming, on screen in full Prowler gear.
At a special screening of Across, the Spider-Verse for Collider and I.M.A.X., co-director Joaquim Dos Santos talked to Collider’s Steve Weintraub about the movie’s secrets and how excited he was about all the hidden surprises for fans. Dos Santos answered questions from the audience after the successful screening. One fan brought up how Marvel Studios showed their multiverse in the “Web of Life” scene, which was meant to show Miles Morales and the audience how all the Spider-People were connected. The fan asked if Marvel or Sony had requested anything to be added.
The Easter Egg-Verse
Everything has to go around at least once, right? You must be careful and ensure everything is clear,” Dos Santos responded. “There are also a few things you put in there and then apologize for later. But, look, I mean, that was done on purpose. If you buy the version with the DVD commentary, Chris Miller will talk in detail about the whole process. But yeah, that was the plan.”
Weintraub then said there were so many details in the movie that it would be almost impossible to find them all in one viewing. He noted that it was the kind of movie you would want to watch repeatedly, pausing it a lot. When he asked about how many Easter eggs there were, Dos Santos told him that all of them would be listed in the director’s commentary and that there were “thousands” of them. He then said:
“There’s a lot, there’s a lot. There’s billboards that are on screen for like a second that I think are inside jokes to so and so and the other guy. If you look at the wide shots, half the members that are at the party, sort of down below Miles and his mom, if you look like really closely, those aren’t even the CG models, those are just actors acting down there.”
