The 1968 movie version of Pierre Boulle’s 1963 book La Planète des singes, also called Planet of the Apes or Monkey Planet, was a critical and commercial success. It also led to many other movies and TV shows based on the same ideas. From 1968 to 2001, there were six movies in the Planet of the Apes series. In 2011, a reboot series was announced that would tell the story of the ape Caesar in a new way. The first movie in the new series, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, came out in 2011. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes went after this movie.
After Disney bought 20th Century Fox in April 2019, the company announced they would make more Planet of the Apes movies. In September 2022, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was announced as the name of the fourth movie in the Planet of the Apes trilogy. Fans will be able to see the simian-filled settings again on the big screen in 2024, almost seven years after the last movie. Here’s what we know about the new film everyone looks forward to.

What Is the ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Plot?
The story of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will pick up years after the events of the “Caesar Trilogy.” It will be a “soft reboot” of the series. Characters from those movies will still be part of this new one, but it’s possible that Caesar, Koba, Cornelia, Maurice, Rocket, and Nova will not be in it.
The official synopsis for the film from 20th Century Studios reads:
Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously, and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all he has known about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Who’s Making ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’?
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be directed by Wes Ball, who was in charge of making The Maze Runner series for 20th Century Fox. Ball’s job will be to run after Matt Reeves, who handled the last two movies, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.
Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, who wrote the script for Avatar: The Way of Water, and Patrick Aison, who wrote Prey, worked together on it. Jaffa and Silver also wrote the scripts for the first three Planet of the Apes movies.
Along with Joe Hartwick Jr. (The Maze Runner) and Jason Reed (Mulan), Ball, Jaffa, and Silver, they also produced the movie. Peter Chernin (Hidden Figures) and Jenno Topping (Ford v. Ferrari) are the film’s executive producers.
Some of Ball’s old colleagues from The Maze Runner trilogy returned to work with him on the new movie. These included John Paesano, who composed the music; Gyula Pados, who shot the film; and Dan Zimmerman, who edited it.
