Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Review – A Compelling Mix of Death, Drama, and Romance In 1600s America

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is a captivating game that takes players into a supernatural, alternate reality version of 1600s America. The game is developed by Don’t Nod and offers a fresh story that revolves around ghost-hunting detectives, death, drama, and romance. Despite borrowing familiar structures from action-adventure games, the game stands out with its compelling mix of characters, investigation mechanics, and a wonderfully original setting.

The game follows the trend of so-called “crevice crawlers,” which are third-person games with a serious story and slow pacing, similar to titles like God of War, A Plague Tale, and The Last of Us. While Banishers’ adherence to this template made the adventure feel somewhat familiar, the original setting and strong writing still make for an enjoyable experience.

Playing as Red, an overly-emotional Scotsman, and Antea, a ghost herself, players will embark on a cross-country journey to solve haunting cases and help resolve unfinished business for ghosts. The game features a beautifully reimagined colonial America backdrop, where death and the afterlife constantly loom over the characters, creating a dilemma of moral choices and emotional depth.

Although the game has some pacing issues and the choices feel limited at times, the ability to swap between living and spectral characters to uncover clues and solve mysteries is a standout feature. Additionally, the game offers opportunities to customize equipment and skill tree perks to fit individual playstyles, adding an extra layer of engagement.

Despite some clunky combat mechanics, the game’s combat encounters, puzzles, and side quests offer a fairly solid experience. However, the enemy variety becomes scarce, and the repetitive combat encounters can be tiresome.

Overall, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden provides an immersive and engaging experience, offering a fresh take on the supernatural genre with its compelling narrative, intricate mysteries, and unique gameplay mechanics. If you’re a fan of weird games filled with heartbreak and ectoplasm, this game offers an enjoyable and immersive experience.
