Akitoshi Kawazu talks about further remasters and new projects

    Published on:

Akitoshi Kawazu’s SaGa series is not even close to being done. In recent years, Kawazu has held an influential role at Square Enix, more than reviving SaGa.

Not only Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions, but also the re-release of the Game Boy trio as Collection of SaGa and most recently, SaGa Frontier Remastered and Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered.

For the 35th anniversary in 2024, Kawazu has even more ideas for the old series.  This is obvious from the latest issue of the Japanese Famitsu.  According to Kawazu, the number of SaGa games suitable for further remasters is getting smaller and smaller.  Again, he considered Romancing SaGa 2 and Unlimited SaGa.

Some of the games he thought about were Makai SaGa, SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu, and SaGa 3: Jikuu no Hasha. These were the series’ “first generation” games. In the West, these games came out as Final Fantasy Legend.

A whole new game also seems possible.  There are unannounced projects in the pipeline, Kawazu says. For the 35th anniversary, they want to offer something exciting.  In Japan, the SaGa Emerald Beyond trademark was just filed.
