AMD FSR successfully implemented in GTA V thanks to Clever Mod

    Published on:

The most talked-about items in the past month have been AMD FSR and the FidelityFX Super Resolution spatial upscaling technique. A lot of game makers have already talked about how easy it is to integrate, but no one, not even AMD, could have imagined how quickly modders could add it to games that are already out there.

In the first case, NarutoUA replaced Grand Theft Auto V’s built-in upscaler with FSR without even having access to the open source code, which AMD has not yet made public. You can download the mod from this page; just follow the installation guide below to try it yourself.

    1. Download the latest release
    2. To copy d3d11.dll and gta5_fsr.ini to the root of Grand Theft Auto V (e.g. SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V)
    3. Go to ingame settings Advanced Graphics Settings And set Frame scaling mode:
      • 0.5x – Performance Mode
      • 0.667x – Balanced Mode
      • 0.75x – Quality Mode
      • 0.883x – Ultra Quality Mode
    4. To check gta5_fsr.ini file if you need more control over mod settings

    1. Rename this mode d3d11.dll to d3d11_fsr.dll and edit enblocal.ini File:

NarutoUA also gave a video of action. You can see below that FSR makes a picture that is much clearer than Grand Theft Auto V’s original way of upscaling.

This looks like it is just the start of fan-made tweaks for AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution. There is a built-in resolution scaling tool in most games these days that can be changed in a similar way to get better results. We will be sure to keep an eye on these fan projects and changes.

Of course, a native version is likely to be better, and a lot of developers have already said they will support AMD’s FSR. We will have more on that soon. NVIDIA is also continuing to add to and improve its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) picture reconstruction method. Yesterday, an Ultra Quality mode was found in the Unreal Engine 5 documentation, but it is not yet working.
