How video game designers make the best noises

Everything sounds better in computer game.

This summer season, I became hyper-conscious of the sound of event, or robbery, or “selecting things up.” I was editing a gameplay video from an pre-release construct of The Outer Worlds, and I heard this Noise

To be fair, it’s numerous sounds all played in succession, when the gamer loots the body of a Marauder.

In my journey I talked to the people who actually made the Noise: Justin Bell and Renzo Heredia from Obsidian Home Entertainment. And I hit up sound style graduate student Hallie Boyd for some essential background on foley work and the viewpoint that made the Noise so juicy and satisfying to hear.

Lastly, I chose to do a little bit of sound design myself. I discovered that it’s way harder than it looks, but precisely as fun as it looks. See the video to find out more about the Sound, and see my descent into sound style insanity.
