How do you get a Blue Tick on Twitter? It’s a question that has plagued thousands of social media users. After all, there doesn’t seem to be any clear criteria for making the cut – it shows up on profiles with a large following, and some with a few thousand. Fortunately, the mystery behind the process is getting a little less, um, mysterious.
That’s because Twitter announced this week that it is opening its doors to applications for verified accounts. More than three years ago, Twitter slowed down its Blue Tick process over concerns of whether a verified Twitter account was seen as an endorsement or not.
Prominent far-right extremists like EDL founder Tommy Robinson (aka Stephen Yaxley-Lennon), white supremacist Richard Spencer, and anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer had all previously verified Twitter accounts. Robinson, Spencer and Loomer then had their blue check marks removed.
Other far-right figures such as Katie Hopkins, Milo Yiannopoulos and David Vance had also verified Twitter accounts before their accounts were completely suspended. Twitter had previously hit back on suggestions that a Blue Tick was some sort of endorsement.

The social networking giant had said, “Verification has long been seen as an endorsement. This perception got worse when we opened verification for public submissions and verified people we don’t endorse in any way.” And now, after a long hiatus that redesigned the Blue Tick system, Twitter’s new verification process is relaunched for everyone.
The new Twitter verification process will be rolled out starting Thursday, May 20. Accounts that fall into six different categories can request a coveted Twitter Blue Tick. Here are the different categories for Twitter verification …
• Government • Companies, brands and organizations • News organizations and journalists • Entertainment • Sports and gaming • Activists, organizers and other influential individuals
Those who wish to request Twitter verification can do so directly in their account settings. If you don’t see an option on the Account Settings tab to request a Blue Tick, don’t worry, Twitter is rolling this out.

If you are ultimately successful with your Blue Tick application, keep in mind that Twitter has said that accounts that “repeatedly break Twitter’s rules should remove the blue badge.”
In a blog post Commenting on the changes, Twitter said, “We are pleased to share that starting today, we will be rolling out our new verification request process and reviewing public requests for verification on Twitter.
“Over the past few months, we’ve been working to clarify the eligibility criteria for verification and have launched a new policy formed based on public feedback. We’ve also started enforcing that policy by automatically removing the verified badge from accounts that no longer meet the updated verification criteria, such as those that are inactive or incomplete We are grateful to everyone who participated in our public feedback period and shared ideas on how to improve verification on Twitter.
“Today’s rollout is the next milestone in our plans to bring more transparency, credibility and clarity to Twitter verification.”
