Apple's Future Plans for a Car and an AR Headset More Pragmatic Era

Apple is developing products with a more practical mindset to compete in the automotive and mixed-reality headset markets.

Apple Inc. rarely enters a market first. For example, the Sony Walkman came out before the iPod, the iPhone came out after Palm and BlackBerry dominated the phone market, the iPad came out after Microsoft's tablet, and the Apple Watch came out before the Google smartwatch platform.

The entries from Apple, however, have changed the categories. With the iPod, Apple revolutionized the market with its click wheel and white plastic and metal design. All-screen gadgets and app stores gained popularity thanks to the iPhone and iPad.

The Apple Watch introduced advanced health sensors and a phone-like user interface. Apple felt in front even when it wasn't necessarily first in a situation.

But these days, Apple might be adopting a new strategy: practicality. The company aims to be less revolutionary and more pragmatic as it prepares to push into two major categories—a mixed-reality headset and an electric car—to get the products out the door.
