A lot of new interviews have been added this week Final Fantasy XVI issued. Compared to IGN, the makers also made comparisons with Game of Thrones and The Witcher. Above all, of course, because they were asked about them.

In the final trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, the author repeatedly drew comparisons to Game of Thrones and The Witcher. Political intrigue and kingdoms at war – Clive would soon replace Geralt IGN.

“Because the two series are so well known, it’s hard to make a medieval high fantasy game these days without at least some comparisons to Game of Thrones and The Witcher,” says localization director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox.

“And while we’re ultimately aiming for something that can hopefully stand on its own, the fact is that there are a lot of Game of Thrones fans on the development team, so you’ll find some similarities in the storytelling and character design. In most cases, however, these similarities don’t go beyond a few physical features, be it appearance or characterization,” said Koji Fox.

You wouldn’t just limit yourself to Game of Thrones and The Witcher. “If you look closely, you’ll find clips from many different media – be it novels, games, movies, anime or manga. Inspiration from other works is often the basis for many ideas in the early development phase.

“If you’re describing how you want a particular fight to be, it’s more effective to say ‘like that one scene in so-and-so’, and work from there to give it a life of its own.” so Fox. The same would also apply to characters. Descriptions like “Indiana Jones, who is cocky but looks like Vigo from Ghostbusters 2” are easy to visualize and anyone would understand what is meant.

“As for intrigue and kingdoms at war, well…it’s hard to save the world when the world doesn’t need saving, just as it’s hard to justify going after Imperial Army soldiers and putting them in hitting each other when you’re there.” the empire is at peace,” Fox said.

“Many good stories are rooted in conflict. They give meaning to the characters. They create losses. They give the heroes something to conquer. Intrigue contributes to this. I wouldn’t say that though [Final Fantasy XVI] is a story of political intrigue,” Fox wonders. “It’s a story about Clive. And while politics plays a part in what is happening around Clive, he is not at the center of the action, but at the mercy of greater forces.”

Final Fantasy XVI is in development for PlayStation 5 and is currently slated for a summer 2023 release. Visit our article archive for more details.
