Sky broadband customers could soon have much, much faster downloads in their homes. The UK internet service provider (ISP) has slowly ramped things up since last year with more homes being treated to a Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) – which offers a much more reliable connection than standard copper cables.
Sky’s broadband currently starts from £28 per month, which includes download speeds of 59Mbps. The company’s ultra-fast broadband costs £35 per month and offers speeds of over 120 Mbps
Sky has already offered around three million households the option to subscribe to its Ultrafast service, which offers speeds of around 145 Mbps – that’s more than twice the UK average.
At that rate, it takes about 5 minutes to download a Full HD movie to your TV. However, it now appears that it is even faster.
According to the always reliable team of ISPreview, credible sources have indicated that Sky could be close to launching a service called Ultrafast Plus.
This premium option allows users to whiz the internet into their homes at speeds of over 500 Mbps — bringing the same HD movie in just over a minute.

Sky has declined to comment on the speculation, but last year Aman Bhatti, Director of Propositions, Sky Broadband, spoke about its Fiber to the Premises upgrade: “The launch of FTTP, the UK’s most advanced broadband technology, reflects Sky’s commitment innovation and providing customers with the fastest and most reliable broadband possible,” said
“This means that with Sky Broadband Ultrafast, we can provide our customers with average speeds that are 12x faster than standard, allowing customers to download, stream, browse, work from home and game freely.”
With BT and Virgin Media now offering customers speeds of 1 Gbps, it seems vital that Sky improve its service to keep up with its rivals.
And as more of us stay at home to work and play, having faster speeds is becoming increasingly important.
For busy homes that stream videos all day, download PS5 games, and have endless Zoom conversations, a 500Mbps connection seems to be becoming more important than ever.
