PlayStation 5 sales have sold more than 7.8 million worldwide since the console’s launch in November last year, Sony announced.
Shortly after Microsoft released its third-quarter financial earnings report, Sony released its financial results for FY2020, with an earnings call coming soon. Additional documents to the financial results can be found here (consolidated financial results) and here (additional information).
While demand continues to outstrip available supply, Sony has managed to ship 7.8 million PS5 units by March 31, 2021. As noted in the financial results, of those 7.8 million units, 3.3 million units were shipped during the first 3 months of 2021. Interestingly, as noted by industry analysts Benji Sales and Daniel Ahmad, this means that the PS5 outperforms the PS4 with launches aligned in the same period. For reference, during the same period, Sony managed to sell 7.6 million PS4 units.
“Revenues increased year-over-year by 678.7 billion yen (34%) to 2 trillion yen 656.3 billion (up 35% based on constant exchange rates). -On content and an increase in hardware sales as as a result of the launch of PlayStation 5, “says Sony’s annual report.
In terms of software sales for both PS4 and PS5, a total of 338.9 million games were sold during Sony’s fiscal year. Of these games sold, 58.4 million copies (17%) came from Sony’s own studios.
In the past fiscal year (ending March 31, 2021), a total of 338.9 million games were sold for PS4 and PS5.
This includes both packaged and digital copies.

For Sony’s next fiscal year (FY21), the Japanese company predicts that its first-party studios under the PlayStation Studios umbrella will generate more revenue than last year (FY20).

Impressive figures for Sony, especially considering that the supply was hampered by component shortages.
The PS5 launched in the US, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea on November 12. The console launched in other regions a week later, on November 19.
